On a Mission

I am on a mission...and if you know me; you know that I when I get something in my head I just won't quit. That can be both good and bad. Although this time, it is ALL good!

If there was one thing that you could change about your body what would it be? In all honesty, I would like to change my fingers. I know you are thinking that I am TOTALLY crazy...but really I wish I could grow long, manicured nails. However, I have larger fingers and wide nail beds making it a little impossible. Oh well, I can't change it so I just deal with it. ;)

BUT....

One thing that I can change is my weight. I have always struggled with my weight. Back when I was in the 8th grade I started to pack it on. I didn't realize it until I was in the 11th grade that it made a HUGE difference how much you weighed. So I started to eat healthy, exercise and it worked! The weight dropped. I was happy and I was content with how I looked.

**LET ME JUST STOP TO OFFER A BRIEF COMMERCIAL HERE...I DO NOT WANT THIS POST TO SOUND LIKE IT IS ALL ABOUT ME AND HOW GOOD I AM...BY NO MEANS DO I WANT THAT...I AM JUST WRITING ABOUT MY JOURNEY WITH MY WEIGHT**

Well fast forward almost 10.5 years later, college, marriage, babies and just life in general. I had put weight on. Again I didn't even notice, but it was time to do something about it. So I started to change my eating and exercise. That was 2.5 years ago. I have been able to maintain my weight since then, but when 2010 rolled around I wanted to get even more healthy. I wasn't concerned with losing weight this time; I just wanted to eat healthy and start to exercise again.

So I set a goal of no more sugary stuff (snacks, cookies and chocolate) in the house. We stopped buying all that and started buying veggies, fruit, whole grains and all natural. LOVE IT...and it helps when your children do too! I love cooking healthy for my family...like last night we had whole wheat pasta and homemade sauce (from the Biggest Loser cookbook.) So almost 6 months into changing the way we eat and I am content with that. Don't get me wrong, there are days when we will have something sugary or stop for something not so healthy, but we have turned the corner.

Well, that took care of the eating healthy part...

What about exercise? What could I do that would hold me accountable?!?! It was then that I remembered hearing about the 5k held on the 4th of July here in our little town...DONE! That was my new goal. I wanted to train to run the 5k. Now maybe some of you (or all of you LOL!) are thinking, "Why in the world would one person need to TRAIN to run 3.1 miles. That is easy." Well first of all, I do not run. I am sure if my gym teacher, Mrs. Hayes, saw me run her jaw would drop. "Heather Frey run?!?! No WAY!!!" That, my readers, is why I am training.

So I started to use the Couch to 5k program. Seriously, I had my doubts when I first started this program....but let me tell you IT WORKS!!!! Last night I ran 2.25 miles! I am serious! I ran and ran and ran. I felt like Forest Gump when they yell, "RUN FOREST RUN!" LOL! You get the picture.

My journey through this is almost complete. July 4th will be here soon and I am so nervous, but I am SO excited too! I could totally flop this and may not even be able to complete the race, but in the end, I have found something that I enjoy doing. Something that makes me feel awesome. I can't wait...oh and I have also signed up for 2 more 5k's before the summer is over. :) Let the games, errr I mean, races begin!! :)
